About

Great Perhaps is a YA book blog written by Kate Baker, a high school English teacher in southern Idaho. Its main purpose is to review and recommend great books that teachers and school librarians ought to have on their library shelves, and to help get those great books into the hands of young readers.

The Name

This website gets its name from John Green’s excellent Looking for Alaska. The adolescent protagonist of that book, quoting the last words of François Rabelais, “go[es] to seek a Great Perhaps” and ends up discovering that life is much more complicated and much more simple than he ever dreamed. Reading allows everyone, regardless of age, situation, or location, to seek and explore a Great Perhaps, and so this blog was named in honor of that quest and as a hat-tip to the book that made Kate fall in love with contemporary YA literature.

Contributors

Currently, this website has two regular contributors: Kate Baker and Meredith Hoffman.

Want to Join?

Great Perhaps welcomes guest bloggers and is interested in adding additional regular contributors to its pages. If you are interested in reviewing a book or writing an article here, please send an email to mrsbaker06 (at) gmail (dot) com. (That’s a zero before the six.) If you are interested in becoming a regular contributor, definitely send an email, but you may want to consider guest blogging first to make sure that you and GP are a good fit for one another.

Got a Suggestion?

GP also welcomes suggestions of books to review, especially if they are accompanied by review copies, as the website operates on a budget of exactly $0 and the local libraries can’t always keep up with the rapid flow of YA book publication. If you would like to send a review copy, please send an email to the address in the previous paragraph for mailing information.

Please share this website with your friends and colleagues, and if you find something online that GP ought to know about, send it this way!

Fine Print

The opinions in this website are those of the author. Guest posts, or posts by contributors other than Kate Baker, express their author’s viewpoints and not necessarily those of any other contributors.

Reviews on this website, unless otherwise noted, are (c) 2010 under a Creative Commons website. You are welcome to redistribute and use these materials for non-commercial purposes so long as you attribute them back to Great Perhaps. For more information, please read here or check out the legal stuff.

As with anything we put before our children, teachers/librarians/parents are encouraged to preview books before recommending them to young readers – appropriateness of content and language is an entirely personal decision.

Kate, I’m so excited about your new blog. I recognized the title immediately. It’s perfect! I loved LOOKING FOR ALASKA. Hope you don’t mind if I buzz up your blog a little on my own blog. So glad to see another straight person standing up for LGBT kids. Since becoming a librarian three years ago, I’ve realized that there is so much work to be done in building acceptance for that community. It breaks my heart to see these kids marginalized. Welcome to the fight!
